SEO Tips For Twitter

Twitter has been around for many years now but over the past year, the popularity of the site in terms of members and publicity has grown by a vast amount. Twitter is a social networking site and micro-blogging service means that the users can ‘follow’ people they know or admire and also be ‘followed’ by others who take an interest in what you have to say. Your Twitter page can be uniquely designed to suit your individual style and brand identity, which is a great feature when trying to expose your business to the masses.

Twitter Profile SEO Tips

11 TIPS to Increase Twitter Followers Quick

In terms of SEO it can play a factor in getting more traffic to the website. Regular and informative ‘tweets’ about your business can drive traffic to the site as long as you use a compelling headline. Below are just a few pieces of advice when creating a Twitter page for SEO.

Keywords in the Twitter Username

Optimising your Twitter page for SEO purposes means that you need to know the places on the Twitter page where Page Rank can be passed onto your site. Unfortunately the links that you post through your tweets can go to your site but are shortened and Page Rank cannot be exploited. The URL in the ‘More Info’ section though can leak page rank so this should be used to go to your site. Making sure your Twitter page URL is self explanatory about what your business does is another major factor as this is what will appear in the search engines so your company name would probably be the most beneficial.

Use Keywords In Your More Info URL Anyway

In the More Info URL part of the Twitter page can be followed by the search engines, which is a great benefit to the site. This link is truncated at the 18th character so the more of your keyword you can get in the first 18 characters the better.

Tweet Quality Content

Just like any search engine optimisation strategy, quality content is key and this still applies for your Twitter posts. Writing compelling tweets that are only 140 characters long can be quite tricky so offering people some free tips and advice on a particular topic based on your industry is a great way of generating traffic. Twitter can also be used to back up any other marketing campaigns that you may be doing to create more exposure and maximise the impact of the internet marketing campaign.

We believe that by ignoring social media websites such as Twitter is foolish as this can expose your company to a wider audience than your usual marketing campaigns would ever do. To find out more about our social media services along with our other search engine optimisation and internet marketing services, please contact our SEO experts.

This is by no means a definitive look at what matters on landing pages. There are more than seven rules. For additional insight I would direct you to this three-part series on Landing Page Optimization. However, these seven basic elements are ones I’ve used consistently for many years now with great results.

1. Have a Clear and Direct Headline
Your landing pages should designed so the headline is first thing a user sees upon landing. First impressions on landing pages are as important as the offline world. Make sure the headline is a direct and simple statement of what the user is trying to accomplish. The goal of the headline is to bridge the moment of recognition so the user understands that the rest of the page content is aligned with completing their goal.

2. Place High Value on Whitespace
Users do not read all the text on a web page. Users scan the text and take away only certain elements that they use to make a decision if the page is relevant to their goal or not. Clean use of space allows users to scan and absorb key messages.

3. Deliver Your Value Proposition with Short Direct Messaging
Your value props should all be the answers to “why?” Keep them limited to three or four bullet points and don’t mince words. This is no time to get cute either. If users can’t quickly and easily understand the benefits of you product or service they will not hesitate to click the back button.

4. Have a Persuasive Message Directly Above the Call to Action
Every great salesman has a message they use to persuade prospects on the fence. Think of your landing page as your online salesman. Make sure you have one final strong persuasive message above the call to action. I find that bandwagon messages can increase user confidence and usually perform very well. An example: “Join the thousands of people that use…”

5. Large Red Buttons Rule
Tell your brand team to go to hell and throw your styleguide out the window. Red buttons can by themselves raise your conversion rate. Green can be good as well but most times in our testing if color matters it is red that wins. Also, don’t skimp on button size. Make users notice where the button is upon landing. Location matters as well but that’s something that needs to be tested on each page.

6. Call to Action Copy Matters
While direct messages can be very effective in the body of the copy direct messages in the call to action can be a turnoff. Words like “Buy,” “Add to Cart” or “Subscribe” that message commitment and a process can lower conversion rates. Softer calls to action like “Try it Now” that message immediacy (Now), but in a risk free way (Try it) can end up improving conversion by getting more users into the funnel.

7. Trust and Security are Still Incredibly Persuasive
Brand, trust and security icons as well as testimonials deliver confidence messages that can have a tremendous impact on conversion. Despite the fact that we are about 10 years into the commercial web, users on even the largest sites and brands in the world are influenced by these messages and images. You can see in this case study the impact that the Verisign and eTrust logo had on revenue per visitor for Audible.com.

Many people seem to be under the impression that there is some secret formula to SEO ( Ten Steps of SEO or Steps of SEO ). In reality this is not true. There is no hidden secret, there is no one process that that will get you to the top of the search engine results. Good results are achieved by gradually, over time using ethical (white hat) methods, to grow your website organically. We have put together these 10 steps of SEO. Follow these and you will be on the right track to improving your online visibility.

Initial Analysis – Online Marketing is just the same as any other marketing campaign. To be able to monitor the progress of your campaign you must first know where you are starting from. It is also a good idea to check that there is actually a market out there.

Keyword research – This is one of the most important aspects of SEO. Our advice would be to spend a long time on this. If you get this bit right the marketing of your site will become a lot easier.

Competitor analysis – Knowing what your competitors are up to is essential, it allows you to plan your strategy. Look who is linking in to your competitor’s site and put these sites on a list of possible link partners. By getting these companies to link back to your site, you eliminate advantages gained by your competitors with these links.

On-page Optimisation – A lot of SEO consultants will tell you content is king, and on page optimisation is the best way to get results. This is not the case as it does carry as much weight in the Google algorithm as other methods. However on-page optimisation should not be overlooked.

Search Engine & Directory Submission – This is a great way to get lots of initial links back to your site. Register with the search engines and this will encourage them to visit your site and index all of your pages. A lot of the time the directories have good PR (Page Ranking) which means you will be getting relevant link backs from respected sites.

Blogging/Content Updates – Adding good quality content to your site on a regular basis will encourage search engines to keep returning to your site. Users will also work in the same way. If you release interesting content once a week people will start to look out for updates and re-visit your site. The easiest way to do this is to set up a blog or news section on your site.

Article Marketing – Article marketing is a very effective aspect of SEO. Submitting articles to article sites such as Ezine or Articlesbase has 2 main benefits. Firstly it allows you to build links back to your website. Secondly, as the articles are free to republish, if your article gets used by anyone, they will need to include the original links from your article.

Link Building – Links are vital to increasing your search engine rankings. However it is not just a case of building as many links as possible. Avoid building links from sites that are not relevant for your niche as these will potentially do more damage than good.

Social Media – There are many forms of social media. We have all heard of sites like Myspace, Facebook & more recently Twitter. Social Media is great for driving traffic to your site and getting your website in front of your target audience, at the same time as building back links we know to be vital to your search engine positioning.

Web Ranking & Link Reporting – reporting on where you are ranking for keywords, and who is linking back to you will allow you to monitor your online campaign closely. You could also run these reports on your competitors to know how your online marketing campaign

We will go into more detail for each of these points in coming posts so, be sure to keep an eye out for updates. You can subscribe to updates via our RSS feed or alternatively subscribe via email and we will send updates direct to your inbox.

Optimizing for Bing isn’t that much different then optimizing for Google. For SEO’s if you use the same practices that get you results in google then you should naturally rank well in Bing or should you? Let’s look at what Bing has to say about this. Our related post about ” SEO for Bing ” and ” How to Perform SEO with Bing for Your Blog ” , read it .

Direct from Bing’s Blog.

“Bing’s SEO principles

SEO is fundamentally about creating websites that are good for people. The most basic advice we can give for achieving optimum rank for your site in Bing is to do the following:

Develop great, original content (including well-implemented keywords) directed toward your intended audience

Use well-architected code in your webpages (including images and Sitemaps) so that users’ web browsers and search engine crawlers can read the content you want indexed)
Earn several, high-quality, authoritative inbound links

As you can see by the links, much of this material has already been discussed in-depth in the Webmaster Center team blog in our ongoing column, search engine marketing (SEM) 101.

The type of SEO work and tasks webmasters need to perform to be successful in Bing hasn’t changed—all of the legitimate, time-tested, SEO skills and knowledge that webmasters have invested in previously apply fully today with Bing. Moreover, investments in solid, reputable SEO work made for Bing will bring similar improvements in your website’s page rank in other search engines as well.”

So what are we looking at here? First of all the first thing we read into this is that Content is king. Nothing new here. We all know that good quality content and lot’s of it is key to ranking in google, Well the same goes for Bing. Also using rellevant keywords in an agressive way without keyword stuffing is very important.

Point #2 again is very famialar to us. and that is to gather as many good quality backilinks as possible. Apparently Bing is not interestedin thousands of low quality links but more so is interested in quality links. So again optimize for Google and you are optimizing for Bing.

From what we can see SEO for Bing is really going to be business as usual for SEO. One final quote from Bing’s blog for SEO really sums it up.

” Ultimately, SEO is still SEO. Bing doesn’t change that. Bing’s new user interface design simply adds new opportunities to searchers to find what the information they want more quickly and easily, and that benefits webmasters who have taken the time to work on the quality of their content, website architecture, and have done the hard work of earning several high-quality inbound links.”

There are 3 main ways to improve website traffic. They are: Visibility, accessibility, maintenance. Each of these brings something to the tally, but when combined, they provide a website owner with about the best net he can cast in the world of potential site visitors.

How do these aspects work and how do they work together to improve website traffic? Well, it all rests upon a simple premise:

A website doesn’t exist suspended in a vacuum. Websites are part of a dynamic and trend-changing world. The biggest mistake site owners make is that they leave the site to fend off for itself once they have created it.

How is this bad? Look at it this way.

Sites need to be visible, accessible, and well maintained. And most important, a website needs traffic to make sales. By not updating your site and by leaving it to ‘die’ a slow death in the back alleys of cyberspace, you aren’t doing anything to improve website traffic and to help your site survive.

Your site needs to be visible in search engine pages; it needs to be easily accessed; and it needs to be maintained to provide a contributive experience for the visitor.

Think of it as a garden. If you don’t prune and weed (i.e., maintenance), the road to the garden will be overgrown and no one will be able to get into the garden (i.e., accessibility).

Once your entry path has disappeared behind a maze of plants and weeds, nobody will even see it and everyone will bypass it without even knowing it is there (visibility).

With these 3 aspects in mind, here are a few tips and pointers as to how you can maintain the accessibility and visibility of your website in cyberspace and improve website traffic to make sure that you are getting traffic and visitors regularly.

- Keywords
Choosing the correct keywords are vital in order to improve website traffic. It pays to choose keywords carefully, because it is based on those same keywords that your site may or may not come up listed in a search engine page.

Figure out which keywords are best associated with your website. You also need to think of how people may think of your site, and thus decide which keywords they are most apt to use.

Next, run the keywords in a search engine to decide if they are good or not (based on the results you get). Find out the ones that are most relevant and apply them to your website.

- Directories
A lot of people underestimate the traffic-sending power of Internet directories. While not as popular as search engines, this is a sure way to improve website traffic.

Furthermore, being listed in directories help to boost your search engine result placement, which will definitely improve website traffic.

- SEO optimization
There are many ways to make sure that your website is optimized for search engines, too many to be listed here as a matter of fact. But through properly optimizing your website you are sure to improve website traffic.

- Pages
Make sure your pages are good and ready to be viewed. This is as simple but many times overlooked way to improve website traffic. A good tip where pages are concerned is to title each page separately. Adding unique descriptions for each page also helps here, as then the site is not seen as a big bundle of same titled and described pages.

-Open Directory Project
The Open Directory Project is a place that a lot of people don’t deign to pay attention to. However this can be a good way to improve website traffic by increasing your visibility.

- Yahoo directory
The Yahoo directory is another good directory that is sure to improve your website traffic. destination many surfers check, so being placed there is always good.

- PPC search engine advertising
If you are looking for traffic, then ppc advertising is a sure fire way to improve website traffic fast. Just make sure you study up a little about it before you jump in.

- Provide good content
People usually search for information. Try to satisfy this need and you could win much traffic. Aim for unique, relevant content.

- Update content regularly
Keep content fresh and always try to have something new, even if just a little tidbit, for your visitors. The search engines love fresh new content and the reward you with increased traffic to your website.

- Have a blog and update regularly
The easiest way to improve website traffic is to have a blog and to update it regularly. Making use of the RSS feed will also encourage people to remain in touch with your site and ultimately to come back again and again.

- Use appropriate keywords for images
If you are using graphics, make sure to label them with an appropriate keyword or name. A lot of people use Google images and an image can thus lead a visitor to your site. This is not a big traffic getter, but making use of every little thing will definitely improve website traffic.

- Check your pages on engines regularly
Do a check on yourself periodically. This way you will know if viewers are getting the same thing you are trying to convey.

- Banner ads optimize traffic
Many people see banner advertising as dead, but not so. The biggest hurdle is that most website owners don’t know how to devise a good banner. Many wise marketers are still using banner ads to effectively improve website traffic.

- Build a list

Once you get someone to visit your site, try to ensure that the visitor comes back again in the future. You can do this by collecting the visitors name and email address so you can stay in touch and send them future offers. This is one of the most effective ways to not only improve website traffic, but also to maximize your imcome.
- Link exchange
Exchange links for more visibility, gain credibility and naturally to improve your website traffic. You also can build backlink by the way is ” comment in dofollow blog ” . Find it more at Dofollow Blog for Comment

- Email signatures
Make use of your email signature to spread the word about your site. It is also a very good opportunity to brand yourself, giving people a glimpse of what they’d see at your site.

- Write articles
Another way to improve website traffic is to write and submit newsletters and articles. These will always provide you with a way of linking back to your site as well as a window where you can promote your website in a nutshell.

- Press Releases
Many webmasters still have not figured out the importance of press releases and how they can improve website traffic. By writing one or two effective press releases per month you can definitely improve your websites visibility in ways that you just cannot accomplish otherwise. Also, check about ” Free Press Release Website and Press Release with Website Traffic ” to know more things.

Keep in mind, you can’t just build a site and walk away. Traffic is necessary for sales and these are all very effective ways to improve website traffic. Naturally, the more you do the more results you will see.

For those of you who still wonder whether it’s anything more than inane stream-of-consciousness, consider these ways in which Twitter can help you professionally.

Make existing professional relationships stronger and more intimate. I know where Jane’s traveling this week and that Joe’s caught that flu going around. This makes them more human to me and it’s a decent substitute for meeting physically.

Get questions answered. Say you’re trying to put a plugin in your WordPress blog but it gives you errors. Tell your Twitter friends and someone might be able to help you. Now, you wouldn’t have emailed all those people to ask and you wouldn’t have instant messaged them either… but a broadcast message to those paying attention is a lightweight non-intrusive way to do it.

Expand your professional network. By paying attention to @ messages, you see who people you’re working with are working with. If the discussion is interesting enough, you might find someone you’d like to follow on Twitter… and eventually work with.

Promote your blog posts. I don’t tweet every time I post something, but sometimes if it’s one I’m especially proud of or one I want quick feedback on, I’ll post a tinyurl ( or n70.info ) to it.

See what people are interested in. I just looked at my Twitter page and noticed that one of my friends is already trying out Grand Central. Now I know who to talk to to get an opinion on it.

Find out when your colleagues are available for a chat. Nobody wants to bother someone when they’re in the middle of an important project, but IM presence indicators aren’t totally reliable. On the other hand, if someone twitters that they’re “searching for something to do” you know it’s a good time to check in with them.

Create an ad hoc back channel at conferences. Though Twitter’s not ideal for this lacking as it is in temporary groups or any groups at all, I’ve seen it used effectively to bring together conference attendees and conference “watchers” — people who aren’t at the conference but would like to know what’s going on.

Learn important news. I’m much less dependent on my newsreader now because I hear about cool stuff all day via Twitter. For example: I didn’t know that Starbucks was giving away free coffee today until I read it on Twitter.

Twitter’s not without its problems, of course. It’d be great to have Twitter groups, so you could send messages to just a subset of people who are interested in a particular topic. The performance has sometimes been less than adequate as everyone piles in to try it. I suffer from Twitter addiction occasionally, when I compulsively watch Twitter messages roll by instead of doing real work.

Call me a Twitter fangirl if you must — I am one — but don’t let that stop you from considering Twitter as more than just noise. For the web worker isolated from colleagues and interested in making loose connections into productive working relationships, Twitter might be just the thing you need.

Matt Leonard over at Search Engine Journal recently wrote about Twitter SEO Tips : 4 Simple Tips to Help Your Twitter Profile Rank. If you’ve got a Twitter account and want to make sure your profile appears the way you want in search engines, then this is a good article to review. Here is a brief review of Matt’s suggestions:

Optimize the title tag by using your actual name instead of your Twitter username.

Optimize the meta description by writing a good “one line bio”.

Build followers, links and PageRank. Followers who have pages with higher PageRank can help boost your profile’s PageRank and good quality tweets should help with conventional SEO.

Link to your Twitter profile using your name as the link anchor text every now and then.

Mihaela Lica joins the SitePoint blogging team, relaying her SEO tips, tricks and expertise.

For too many, SEO is synonymous with ranking on the first SERP page in Google. For too many, optimizing a site for Google means getting links, many links, no matter what. Defining and redefining SEO will not change the way these people perceive it. This is not an article for them. Those webmasters who optimize solely for Google are basically targeting only 70% of the search engine market, and disregarding the rest.

This is an article for those who need to learn something new, and want to use all possible SEO channels to drive more traffic and to gain more customers. This article will prove what “real” SEO value is to be expected from services like Twitter.

Does twitter Pass Any Link Juice?

Since Twitter started gaining popularity the question about its “SEO value” has been on the minds of many webmasters who obviously want to boost their placement into Google’s SERPs. But using Twitter for “link juice” is a lost battle in Google’s ranking methodology.

Twitter adds a “nofollow” attribute to links submitted by its users. The “nofollow” attribute advises Google, and a few other search engines, to ignore the link. Some of these follow the links but exclude them from their ranking calculations (Yahoo!, Google); some ignore the links completely (MSN). The only known search engine that doesn’t comply with Google’s “nofollow” at all is Ask.com. This example alone shows that Google’s algorithms are not the gospel for all search engines.

According to compete.com, Ask.com owns about 2.5% of the search engine market share. The same source shows that in November 2008 there were 255 million search queries on Ask.com. This is nothing compared to 7235 millions on Google, but can you seriously disregard a source of such traffic? Ask.com is a potential gate for visitors that could convert into customers.

So let’s ask the question again, shall we? Does Twitter pass any link juice? For Ask.com it does.

Do tinyURL Shortened URLs Have SEO Value?

The short answer is yes. TinyURLs ( N70.Info ) are dynamically created URLs that redirect users to the real URL via 301 (permanent redirect). Search engines do not index TinyURLs, but index and pass PageRank to the actual URLs instead. The problem with Twitter, as we already discussed, is the “nofollow” attribute added to all submitted links.

Are There Any Other Possible SEO Advantages with Twitter?

As I already said, SEO is not only about building links. Optimizing a site is about creating and promoting content that can be regarded as a resource. “Creating” is “onsite SEO ( On Page Optimization ) .” “Promoting” is “offsite SEO.”

Every time you submit your site to a directory you “promote it” – meaning that you do “offsite SEO.” Every time a link to your site is published somewhere on the web a gate to your site is being opened. People don’t care about “nofollow” attributes. If they see a link and they think the content it leads to is interesting, they follow.

When visitors land on a page from an exterior link some other metrics are affected: number of unique visitors, number of page views, and time on site. These metrics matter for the search engines more and more; since all other variables are so easily gamed (links and keywords are all subject to spam and black hat SEO strategies).

To make a long story short: although Twitter is a social media tool meant to create community and relationships, it does have an SEO value. For example, Twitter can affect positively your Alexa rankings by sending visitors to your pages. Usage data is a sign of quality for Google and all the other search engines. If you can make people come to your site via Twitter, then this is an SEO advantage you cannot afford to miss.

Twitter SEO can help you take one more step towards owning your online reputation. Did you read our lasted post talking about ” The Top 10 Twitter SEO Tips ” .

When people think of Twitter, they don’t usually think of it as a SEO or reputation management tool. Yet, when optimized correctly, a Twitter profile is yet one more URL that anyone can get to rank for their name.

Here are 4 simple Twitter SEO tips to help your profile rank:

1. Optimize your title tag.

Your Twitter title tag will be this formula: <Actual Name> (Username) on Twitter

The key point here is my name. My actual name is written in my Twitter profile as ‘Matt Leonard’, so that’s how it appears in my title tag. I do not call myself ‘MJ Leonard’, ‘MattLeonard’ or ‘Matt_Leonard’. It’s very important to remember that if you’d like to rank for your name, just as with any form of SEO, use the correct anchor text. In this case, it’s your name.

You can fix this by logging into your Twitter account and clicking ‘Settings’. From there, change your ‘Name’. Do not change your ‘Username’.

2. Optimize your meta description.

Let me clarify, first, that meta description is not a true Google ranking factor. It does, however, insure that people get the impression you’d like them to have and help CTR, which is a ranking factor.

What you may not realize, is that your Twitter ‘bio’, is actually your meta description. When I realized this, my ‘bio’ quickly changed from some fun-loving comments about cheeseburgers and chocolate to the more professional description you see above (which in no way infers that I will not give out even more tips in exchange for junk food).

If you’d like to optimize this even more, talk about yourself in the 3rd person in your Twitter ‘bio’. You can get your name bolded in the meta description by doing so. I personally try to only talk about myself in the 1st person.

You can fix this by logging into your Twitter account and clicking ‘Settings’. From there, change your ‘One Line Bio’.

Note: Google will sometimes include your ‘Location’ in the snippet. So, depending on how seriously you take this, putting your location as ‘Planet Earth’ may not be as funny as you once thought.

3. Build ‘followers’, links and PageRank.

Twitter will internally link your ‘followers’ to your profile. Higher PageRank ‘followers’ can give your page a boost as well. As always, you’ll pick up outside links naturally if you tweet high quality content just as you would with conventional SEO.

4. Link to your Twitter profile using your name as anchor text every now and then.

Don’t just link to your blog. Throw in a link every so often pointed to your Twitter profile and share the wealth.

Have you ever experimented with different ways to rank your Twitter profile? If so, what did you do and why? On a lighter note, are you as impressed with Yahoo Site Explorer as I am for picking out 3 great Tweeps in the above screenshot? Please share your Twitter SEO experiences in the ‘Comments’ below.

Many people who are trying to dream up a domain name for their business discover just how common a unique idea might be. Welcome to the web! Trying to find a domain name that has not been taken is classic needle in a haystack. You can short-cut the process by doing your keyword research first.

If you know what search terms people are using to find your products and services you can back your way into a domain name that gets more merit in those searches. And that’s just the beginning of understanding how to take an idea online.

What I have also come to discover is that there is a proliferation of people out there with great ideas and many of them may even have an idea similar to yours. EXECUTION is what turns an idea into an enterprise. And that is what separates the men from the boys (and the girls from the women).

Execution is a matter of process. I mean process in the literal sense. A successful business needs a roadmap. No successful business that I know of flies by the seat of its pants and many may get there after a lot of failures, trial and error and sometimes costly ventures. But ultimately, a successful business lands on a formula, a process that allows them to deliver consistent results for their clients.

I work with a lot of people who want to start an ecommerce business for many reasons. For the most part, they all have good ideas and most have a good general knowledge about their wares. But very few know how to manifest their ideas online.

There are two roads to take in light of this. The first is to “jump in” – wing it! The second is to find a process that will work for your business. Even if you have to pay more money initially for the second option, you will save time, money, head-aches and heart-ache by the time your business begins to generate a return. If you go the first route, you may in fact never get there. By our conservative estimate, 70% of new online ventures fail.

The good news is that the process for developing your online business is quite easy to execute if you get a little guidance. Here are some of the basic things you should research and understand before embarking on an ecommerce business.

Keyword Research

Keyword research equals market research. People that skip this step are not only shortcutting the process planning stages, they are undermining their ability to succeed! There are plenty of free resources on the web to not only do your research but also educate you with respect to what you should be looking for.

For example, if you decide that the most general search term in your category is one of the ones you’ll focus on, you might as well just beat your head against the wall! The point is, there might be a LOT of searches relative to that keyword BUT you may not ever show up in the search engines for it. The scope of this article doesn’t afford time to explain the process of choosing keywords that you can rank for, so I’ll save that for a future article. But rest assured that this is one of the most important steps in the process.
